1. Paris, France
The top choice for couples has to be Paris, the perfect city for a romantic break for two also known as the ‘City of Love’. Imagine holding hands while walking along the River Seine, or having a picnic in the shadows of the Eiffel Tower (and you’ll get a free light show if you go to see it at night).
For a romantic dinner for two, the maze of candlelit rooms inside the 17th-century Le Coupe-Chou is sure to impress or maybe for a romantic lunch, feast on oysters at Au Rocher de Cancale – a favourite since 1804. For a unique stay, the 4-star Hôtel Da Vinci boasts a swimming pool and spa. It’s just 650 yards from the Louvre Museum and 900 yards from the beautiful Tuileries Garden. Each room in the hotel features a flat-screen TV, air conditioning and bathrobes.
2. Berlin, Germany
Berlin is a city steeped in history and there is so much to see and do. The Mitte district alone has a host of famous sights including Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag Parliament building.
At night, you can enjoy the many bars and clubs on offer. There’s a reason Berlin is so popular with young 20-somethings! Dance the night away then take in the city’s sights and culture during the day. Berlin is the third most popular European tourist destination after London and Paris when looking for city breaks in Europe but, for now, it remains one of the least expensive European cities in which to stay. Meaning you can find luxury hotels at great prices. Stay at the 5-star InterContinental Berlin and enjoy its award-winning spa with hot tub, saunas and swimming pool. The bathrooms have heated floors as well as a bath and shower. It’s Michelin-star restaurant, Hugos, offers panoramic views from the 14th floor. The popular Marlene Bar offers a drawing room ambience with its comfortable seating and wooden interiors.
3. Verona, Italy
Given the connections to one of the greatest love stories of all time, this Italian province is a must for a romantic city break. Verona is quite a small city, which makes it perfect for romantic evening walks with your loved one. The Ancient Roman ties make it an inspiring city to visit for history-lovers too. Head to Teatro Romano for a glimpse back in Ancient History, and take in stunning views across the city from the back of the theatre.
Set in the Porta Nuova district of Verona, rooms at the 4-star Ark Hotel include a flat screen TV, a desk and free toiletries. Guests can enjoy a daily buffet breakfast, and Piazza Bra and the Verona Arena are just 1 mile away.
4. Barcelona, Spain
The vibrant city of Barcelona has it all. This is a city with mountains (Montserrat) and a beach. 4.5km of beach to be precise! So it’s not surprising that Barcelona is one of Europe’s top mini-break destinations searched for. It’s the perfect size to visit for a long weekend, with the rambling streets, copious plazas and excellent viewpoints making it a perfect setting if you’re in the mood for love.
The Grand Hotel Central is in the heart of Barcelona and includes a Michelin starred restaurant, a terrace with an infinity pool and a rooftop bar. It has fantastic views of the Gothic Quarter and Barcelona Cathedral, and the bathrooms have a rain-effect shower and luxury toiletries.
5. Vienna, Austria
Vienna, Austria’s capital, lies on the Danube River and it’s full of stunning architecture, so is one for the history-loving and architecture-admiring couples. You’ll be surrounded by incredible Baroque and Neoclassical architecture and you’ll feel like you’re in a fairy tale, surrounded by castles and magical kingdoms. Its artistic and intellectual legacy was shaped by residents including Mozart, Beethoven and Sigmund Freud. The city is also known for its Imperial palaces, including Schönbrunn, the main summer residence of the Habsburg rulers.
If you’re looking for somewhere to stay in Vienna, Hotel Das Triest is a classic design hotel in the trendy Freihaus quarter and just a 5-minute walk from the State Opera and the Naschmarkt open-air market. Over 300 years ago, this hotel was the main station for the stagecoach route from Vienna to Trieste. The original stables with their vaulted ceilings were converted to lounges, suites and conference rooms. The award-winning restaurant Collio serves Northern Italian gourmet cuisine. In summer, guests of Das Triest Hotel can enjoy their breakfast or barbecue in the Mediterranean courtyard. Fine wines, cocktails and specialities inspired by the Italian cuisine are available at the hotel’s Bistro Porto.
