When you’re looking for a good time in Spain, it’s easy to focus on the Mediterranean. But if you want something a little different, there are some incredible Northern Spain holidays that can really offer something special. The northern regions such as Galicia and the Basque Country are full of stunning scenery, delicious food and drink, and plenty of culture.

With a cooler climate than the southern parts of the country and access to the rugged Atlantic coast, there’s something for everyone, from solo travellers to families. The question is, which region is right for you?

Northern Spain Holidays – Galicia for Beaches

The Spanish beach holiday is a classic. Book yourself into a resort, enjoy the pool and beach, and spend your time eating. However, Malaga and Ibiza aren’t the only Spanish destinations with glorious beaches.

Galicia is a brilliant choice if you’re looking for a beach holiday, with pristine white sands and some slightly more wild choices too. If you’re looking for a beach to help you get away from it all, try Arousa Bay in Pontevedra. For something of a more “traditional” white beach, Playa de Samil in Vigo is a great choice too.

Cantabria for Walking

Active people, and especially walkers and hikers, should explore the option of Northern Spain holidays for their next trip. There are some incredible stretches of coastline and neat walking routes to try – guided or self-guided.

Cantabria offers walks both long and short for everyone, including families. There are challenging coastal walks and hilly strolls to try. For a popular circular walk, go around Monte Buciero, a coastal island which is connected by a sand pit.

You might also like to enjoy an urban walk around Santander. There’s much to explore, from the modern architectural marvel of gallery Centro Botin to the much older cathedral.

Asturias for Cuisine – Northern Spain Holidays

You can’t really visit Spain and leave without enjoying some good food. Asturias is a fantastic choice in Northern Spain if you’re out to seek some delicious dishes.

Make sure you try some of the local favourites like fabada asturiana (Asturian bean and sausage casserole) and caldereta (fish stew). Regional cheeses, cider and wine are not to be missed, either.

Some of the best places to enjoy the local cuisine won’t be found in cities and large towns. Some, like Güeyu Mar in Playa de Vega and Casa Juanín in the Picos de Europa village of Pendones, are small and out of the way, but worth the search.

Basque Country for Culture

The Basque Country is a unique landscape to explore, especially in its culture, and there’s plenty of history to see. Basque is the oldest language in Europe – and no one is quite sure where it’s from.

Of course, you can’t miss the impressive Guggenheim in Bilbao, and the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum is a treat too. In the village of Pasaia, you’ll find a maritime museum that also still hosts a shipbuilding school, where you can learn about the region’s whaling history.

Take a holiday in Northern Spain and see what the region known as “Green Spain” has to offer you – there’s more to the country than beach resorts!
