1. Doughnuts

Loved by New Yorkers and Homer Simpson alike, doughnuts or ‘donuts’ have to be top of the list for any visitor to The Big City…doh! You’re probably thinking you can pop to the nearest supermarket or bakery right now and pick up a donut, and you’re right – but not like the ones you’ll find in New York.

After first opening its doors in 1964, The Donut Pub has come to represent New York City at its very best, brightest and most delicious. Open 24 hours, 7 days a week, The Donut Pub boasts a wall of fresh-made donuts, cookies, and croissant donuts. Grab a stool along their marble counter and enjoy all the delicious treats they have to offer  (their out-of-this-world maple bacon croissant donut is a must try). Just a short walk from their West Village location is the Chelsea Pines Inn. This 3-star hotel has 23 comfortable air conditioned rooms, and is a great base for exploring the local area and attractions, such as Atlantic Theater Company, the Rubin Museum of Art and The High Line.

2. Pizza

Pizza is more popular than ever. New Yorkers love a slice as much as Italians themselves, but with so much choice in NYC, how do you know which place is best? Joe’s Pizza has been serving West Village locals since 1975 and any trip to New York needs to include this establishment. Established by Joe Pozzuoli (originally from Naples, the birthplace of pizza), it has become just as popular with visitors and tourists as it is with locals who know where to come for an authentic New York street slice. Joe’s Pizza also often features in restaurant guides and publications, and GQ Magazine listed it as one of the “Best 25 Pizzas on Earth.”

3-star Washington Square Hotel is just a few minutes walk away from Joe’s Pizza, and offers easy access to New York City’s popular tourist attractions. This unique hotel offers a number of facilities, such as facial treatments, an airport shuttle and a coffee bar. Staff are available 24/7 and can assist with booking tours and tickets.

3. Bagels

Some people say it’s the water that makes New York’s bagels so amazing. Whatever the reason, NYC is home to some of the world’s finest bagels. A good bagel will be one that has a slightly chewy, browned exterior with a dense yet soft interior, and rarely is a bagel eaten without some sort of topping. Close by is the Fairfield Inn by Marriott New York LaGuardia Airport/Astoria, which provides guests with a convenient base when in New York City. It offers 3-star accommodation with air-conditioned rooms, and there are a number of rooms specially designed for families. It’s a 20-minute stroll to 46th Street Ind Queens Boulevard Line, which allows for easy access in and around the city.

4. Burgers

Some of the best food in the world is also the simplest. The humble burger is a New York icon, and with juicy patties, delicious grilled cheese, and a million different sauces to choose from, it’s easy to see why! Black Iron Burger first opened its doors in the East Village of Manhattan in 2008, offering classic American burgers inspired by the Mediterranean, for the foodie, health-conscious and passionate diners seeking high quality, guilt-free American burgers. Their burgers are made of all-natural, high quality meats and are griddled to perfection in their state-of-the-art chrome griddle that locks in their unique flavours and freshness.

Why not stay in the nearby Hotel Indigo Lower East Side, a fantastic 4-star hotel located right in the centre of the city. It also offers an outdoor pool, a rooftop terrace and valet parking.

5. Barbecue

Mouthwatering, slow-cooked meat slathered in sauce and served piping hot from the grill. Tempted? We thought so! New York City has now become a barbecue town in its own right, with exceptional outlets for different regional barbecue styles all over the city. Mighty Quinn’s Barbeque is definitely worth a visit if you’re in NYC, and their approach is simple: to source the best quality ingredients they can and donʼt fuss with them too much. “We cook our barbecue the old school way with plenty of wood and time, adding just the right amount of salt and spice to let that lovely marriage of process and product evolve into something transcendent.” Well, we can’t argue with that!
